WP51 & Win95

Make Wordperfect 5.1 work well with Windows 95/98

My best success in making WP51 work well with Win95/98 has been to create a batch file to start WP51 and TSR programs and assign that batch file to a shortcut.

For example, you might use a batch file such as:

cd\[name of directory]
[name of executable file to run a TSR]
cd\[name of another directory]
[name of another executable file]
cd\wp51
wp [with or without options]
cd\

Batch files, if you are not accustomed to using them, are simply collections of DOS commands, one per line, typed into a regular WP51 document but saved as a DOS text file and named using the ".bat" extension:

([CTRL][F5]+[T]+[S]+[name of file].[BAT]).

After saving a batch file, you can just type its name at the DOS command line and all the saved DOS commands will execute, one at a time. In the example file shown above, each TSR program would load and return control to DOS, WP51 would load and you would use it as usual, and then finally when you exited WP51 control would once again return to DOS.

Once you have created a batch file, assigning it to a shortcut in Win95/98 is very easy:

From anywhere on your screen (outside of all windows) click the right mouse button.
Select [New].
Select [Shortcut].
At the prompt, type in the command line (i.e., c:\sample.bat).
Click the [Next] button.
At the prompt, name your shortcut.
Click the [Finish] button.

If you've done everything right, a new icon will now appear on your screen. You can drag it around and drop it anywhere you want. Because you created a shortcut using a DOS batch file, the shortcut icon will have defaulted to the MS-DOS icon. You can change this, as well as other properties of the WP51 window that will be created when you click on the new icon to start WP51. Just position your cursor over the icon and press the right mouse button, choose [Properties] and start exploring your options.

Finally, when you use the new icon for the first time, you will probably be placed in a full-screen WP51. To shrink this window down to a size where you can both see other items on your screen and use the nifty Win95 buttons for cut/paste, press [ALT][Enter].
