Cool Tricks | Cut & Paste Tips | Navigation Tools | Delete Tricks | Windows Tips Note: The keystrokes listed on this page assume that you are using the enhanced keyboard layout without modifications. Your mileage may vary. Did you know......that if you use the bundled-in WP51 calculator macro, you can hit a space bar and whatever is shown in the outcome line will be automatically pasted into your document where your cursor is located? ...that if your screen display becomes garbled, you can redraw the screen by pressing [CTRL][F3] + [R] ewrite. This should clear most odd character displays (misalignment of tables, columns, skewed lines, etc.). ...that you can keep names and titles together by using "hard" spaces? Just press [Home] before you press your space bar and "Mr. Jones" will never split apart at the end of a line again. This trick works for hyphens as well. ...that you can quickly switch back to a generic keyboard from a remapped keyboard by pressing [CTRL][6]; that's plain "6" not [F6]. Did you know......that WP51 has a three-item deletion memory, so that you can restore up to the last three items you deleted? Use this trick combined with creative delete tricks to cut & paste as easily (or more easily) in WP51 as in a Windows-based application. For instance, [CTRL][L] then [Y] will delete everything from your cursor to the end of the page. Reposition to where you want to paste the text, and [F1][R] will paste, or restore, the text in the new position! ...that WP51 features a "temporary" save function that allows you to temporarily store a section of text and then paste, or retrieve, it into a document repeatedly? Just block the text you want to copy and press [F10]. When prompted for a file name for the block, just press [Enter]. This stores the text in temporary memory. To paste the stored text, retrieve it by pressing [Shift][F10] and pressing [Enter] when prompted for a file name. Did you know...
...that you can go back to where you "just were" before you made a major navigation move? Just press the go-to key twice, [CTRL][Home] [CTRL][Home]. ...that you can redisplay the last directory listing shown, including asterisks, by pressing [F5][F5]. ...that the [Home] key is your key to putting your cursor right where you want it? The table below offers a navigation table. Try these keystrokes with a document several pages long and extending beyond the right edge of the screen.
...that you can easily navigate a table used as a fill-in form? Just lock the cells that hold constant information (for example, NAME, ADDRESS, or CITY), and when you tab to a new cell you'll pass those cells by without a stop. To lock a cell: enter table edit mode with [ALT][F7], position your cursor in the cell you wish to lock, lock the cell with [F]ormat + [C]ell + [L]ock + [O]n, and exit table edit mode [F7]. Now when you tab through the table, you'll skip over the cells that require no editing.
...that all your smooth navigation moves will work when Block is on? This is helpful, because it allows you to quickly select large sections to delete. ...that you can delete the word your cursor rests on by pressing [CTRL][Backspace]? ...that you can also delete the word your cursor rests on by pressing [CTRL][Delete]? ...that you can delete everything right of your cursor and to the end of the line by pressing [CTRL][End]? ...that you can delete everything right of your cursor and to the end of the current page by pressing [CTRL][L]? ...that you can delete everything right of your cursor and to the end of the current page by pressing [CTRL][Page Down]? ...that you can delete an entire table row by positioning your cursor in the row and pressing [CTRL][Delete]? The corollary to this trick is that you can add a row by pressing [CTRL][Insert]. Did you know.......that if you open and close Windows-based programs (and WP51) frequently throughout the day, your computer may slooooooow down, even grinding to a complete halt? Why? When you close a program, it doesn't always release all the RAM memory it has been using. Repeatedly opening and closing programs magnifies this problem. Solve it by occasionally rebooting or just adding more RAM to your computer. ...that if you need to switch between WP51 and another program, [ALT][Tab] will move you from one Window to another? ...that you can add WP51 to your Windows Start Menu? This is easiest to do if you have already set up a desktop shortcut to start WP51. If you haven't or don't know how, see our how-to page. If you already have a shortcut, add it to your Start Menu by clicking Start, Settings, and Task Bar & Start Menu. Choose the Start Menu Programs tab, and click Advanced. Click on the Programs folder in the left-hand pane, and then choose File, New, and Shortcut. Follow the instructions in the dialog box to browse for the Destop shortcut and add it to your Start Menu. |
