The "dear doctor" zip contains a set of three macros that prevent you from having to retype a doctor's name in the salutation of a letter after you've already typed it once for the inside address.

As always, the macros make some assumptions:
  • your cursor is somewhere between the inside address and the salutation in a template letter
  • the inside address contains M.D.
  • the salutation template is set up in the form: Dear Dr. :
The good news is that all of these items are completely configurable in the macros. I've placed comments at the points where you might make modifications.

And, as usual, there are a few caveats. If the letter is addressed to a Ph.D. or a D.D.S., the macro will search backward beyond the address to the next M.D. it finds. So, it will either pick up the signature line of the previous letter (which is why you might get a letter from your doctor with a salutation to your doctor) or it might not find anything and just quit. How to get around that: Just keep in mind that it doesn't look for everything. Or copy the macros to a new set and edit for non-M.D. situations.

Here's what's in the zip:

  • deardr.wpm - I remap this to [CTRL][D] - Changes "Dear Dr. :" to "Dear Dr. Jones:"
  • dearfst.wpm - I remap this to [CTRL][F] - Changes "Dear Dr. :" to "Dear John:"
  • makename.wpm - I remap this to [CTRL][M] - Changes "Dear Dr. :" (where the inside address is, for instance, John Smith, M.D.) to "Dear Johnny" (where you supply the nickname)
  • deardr.xmp - just a sample template that the macros will work with
Last thoughts: The macros are set up to quit and place your cursor at the end of the first line of text following the salutation. This macro works just as easily for letters from attorneys to attorneys; just replace the search for M.D. with esq. The variable that temporarily stores the doctor's name (variable: sal) might be reused by your macros for another purpose. If you have the getdemos macro, any one of these three macros can be used immediately after getdemos. Or, better still, edit getdemos to also prompt you for the salutation and physician address and have them pasted into your document along with PT demographics all in one fell swoop. Finally, as you bring new blank templates into your file, the macro can be used again and again. Just make sure that your cursor is between the salutation and the inside address.
