Jack Nicol Cub Camp, Longs Peak Council, near Red Feather Lake, Colorado
Camp Nicol is Longs Peak Council's brand-new cub resident camp and stands as strong testimony to the immense value of volunteer labor, the commitment of the Council's professional staff, and the importance of donor dollars. The facilities include a frontier fort, a medieval castle, and two ships in the camp's pond. All this offers plenty of activities for Cubs staying for 3-day/2-night adventures.
We followed a group of Cubs as they went through Camp Nicol and saw them having the time of their life. The camp attracts Cubs from many states and seems an ideal spot to spend a half a week if you're a Cub, Webelo, or even an adult. Tents are provided for the Scouts to sleep in; meals are served in the brand-new dining hall. We so enjoyed our brief stay at Camp Nicol that we added an extra day to our stop at the Scout Ranch in order to photograph all areas and get to know the staff a bit better.
The castle is a great deal of fun, even for an adult. We look forward to visiting again in the future when the moat is completed. Inside the castle walls we found a Partner-Pal program in full swing, with Cubs and adults involved in getting-to-know-you activities and, later, handicrafts. Both cubs and their partners were more than happy to pose for photographs, and they were quite a photogenic group. Near the castle, Cubs had their archery lessons on a scaled down range. All the facilities, in fact, have equipment scaled to the typical Cub's smaller dimensions.
The group moved on to the fort for a rousing water balloon battle and later a turn at the BB Range. The fort is set among trees and the area around it is dotted here and there with the occasional covered wagon or wagon wheel. The day's activities wound down following another battle between crews on the two ships and a treasure hunt. Evening found the cubs enjoying dinner in the spacious dining hall and later a campfire with staff.
For young boys (and their young-at-heart companions), Jack Nicol Cub Camp offers relative comfort, adventure, and a friendly, committed staff.
